I’ve been using Twitter for a number of years now, both personally and professionally, and have found it be a great tool for discovery, sharing, and communication. My experience with Twitter has also taught me how to “sift through the noise” that at times can be overwhelming.
My new favorite technique for helping to make order of Twitter is through the use of hashtags. Hashtags, according to Wikipedia
are words or phrases prefixed with the symbol # … [which] a person can search for the string #Wikipedia and this tagged word will appear in the search engine results.
The reason I have become such a fan of Hashtags is that I can now search for very specific content using the corresponding hashtag. For example, if I was looking for information related to edSocialMedia I would search Twitter using the #edsocialmedia hashtag and every tweet that was coded using that hashtag would show up in my search results.
Hashtags are not perfect however, in my opinion there are two major weaknesses:
- You are at the mercy of people using Twitter to include hashtags in their tweets.
- A hashtag must exist for the topic you are interested in following.
As a result, the purpose of my post is to not only introduce you to hashtags but to also introduce hashtags to the independent school community that we can use and follow which I hope will make Twitter even more enjoyable to use.
I am proposing the introduction of the following hashtags:
#ismarketing – Thanks to Rob and LIza Norman of Turnaround Marketing for actually introducing this hashtag. Please use this hashtag to discuss issues related to all things marketing at independent schools including SEO, inbound marketing, etc…
#isadmission – Please use this hashtag to discuss issues related to all things specific to the admission process at independent schools.
#isfinaid – Use this hashtag to discuss issues related to all things specifc to the financial aid process at independent schools.
#isalumni – Use this hashtag to dicuss issues related to all things specific to alumni offices at independent schools.
#isfundraising – Use this hastag to discuss issues related to all things specific to fund raising and development at independent schools.
#isedchat – Use this hashtag to discuss topics related to independent school teaching, learning, and sharing.
#indyschool – Use this hashtag to discuss general issues related to independent schools not covered by the above hashtags.
#isathletics – Use this hashtag to discuss topics related to all this specific to independent school athletics.
Now I have to ask you a favor – please share this blog post anywhere and everywhere you can think of in order to make these hashtags as effective and worthwhile as possible.
Additionally, if you would like to suggest hashtags that the readers of edSocialMedia could/should use please include them in the comments section below.
