My journey to this video chat with Roxbury Latin School’s Andrew Katz started with a tweet.

I can’t remember who mentioned RL’s uRL (, but the tweet gave a heads up to Andrew’s presentation at CASE-NAIS about their year old mashup site.

Intrigued, I hopped over to the conference web site; reviewed the session description; and from there visited uRL to get a sense of how the school’s streaming data from a variety of sources to help keep the community in tune with what’s happening on a daily basis.

I shot Andrew a quick note and, voila, we scheduled an interview that goes into the anatomy of the mashup.

Specifically, our conversation covers:

  • defining what is a mashup
  • explaining RL’s commitment to producing all manner of content
  • how uRL benefits the Roxbury Latin community
  • achieving community buy in and why it has succeeded
  • what’s next for uRL
